How to Measure Replacement Foam Cushions?

Step 1: Measuring Your Foam Cushions

There are two methods for measuring your new foam inserts:

  1. Use Existing Foam: If your current foam isn’t too compressed or misshapen. Use that as a guide.

  2. Measure the Cover: If the foam is out of shape, measure the seams of the cushion cover instead. Add ½ inch to the thickness, width, and depth to ensure the foam fills the cushion properly. For example: If the fabric seams measure 5” x 24” x 24”, order foam that is 5.5” x 24.5” x 24.5”.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Foam
It is critical to understand the quality of the foam to ensure that your cushions stay comfortable and durable. Many furniture pieces that you see in retail stores often use lower-grade foam, which can sag or lose shape over time.

1. Foam Density
The density of the foam determines the comfort, durability, support, and cost of the foam products. The higher the density of the foam, the better it would be able to support your weight.

2. Foam Firmness
Firmness is used to refer to the surface feel of the foam, while support is referred to foam’s ability to “push back” against weight and prevent bottoming out. A high-density foam will not collapse under your body weight. A higher support factor, typically 2.0 or above,
indicates better performance for load-bearing applications like seat cushions.

Frequently Asked Question

1. Why does foam quality matter?

Common Pitfalls
Many manufacturers prioritize cost-saving over quality, using lower-grade or scrap foam that deteriorates quickly. This practice leads to early cushion replacement and customer frustration.

Long-Term Benefits
Investing in high-quality foam ensures that your furniture remains comfortable and retains its appearance over time.

2. Is firmer foam more expensive?
No, firmer foam is not necessarily more expensive. This is a common misconception. The cost of foam is primarily determined by its weight (density) rather than its firmness.

3. What firmness do most people go with?
The firmness of a cushion is a subjective and personal decision. Most people come to Foamite to firm up a sagging cushion. In general, most customers opt for Medium-Firm or Firm foam. However, we always encourage customers to visit our showroom to test out the foam in person and find the firmness that works best for them.

4.Do I need fibre wrap?
Whether you need fibre depends on the look and feel you want for your cushion. Most seats and backs do require fibre. It gives the cushion a “fuller” look, adds some comfort, and protects the foam and fabric from rubbing and damaging each other.

5. Do I need to account for the fibre in my dimensions?
No, it’s a very soft material so we typically do not account for it when determining the foam sizing.

6. What’s the difference between our foam and buying a new couch?
Our foams are made with higher density, making them more durable and longer-lasting. Many big-box stores use lower-density foam because it’s cheaper to produce and ship, but it tends to wear out faster and doesn’t hold up as well over time. High-density foam ensures better performance and value for your investment
