Guide To Fibre Wrapping

Your search for high-quality foam cushions ends here. You’ve carefully measured your dimensions, chosen the perfect foam type, and now you’re faced with an important decision—should you add fibre wrapping to your cushions?

Most professional upholsterers strongly recommend fibre wrapping for cushions, but why is it so popular? What are the benefits, and how does it enhance comfort and durability?

In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about fibre-wrapped foam cushions—what it is, why it matters, and why we recommend it for a superior seating experience. Keep reading to make the best choice for your cushions!

What Is Fibre?

Polyester fibre, also known as fibre wrap, batting, Terelyne, or Fortrel, is a padded layer adhered to foam for added comfort and durability. At Foamite, we use fibre wrap to enhance cushions by giving them a fuller, more rounded look while also adding a protective layer. For extra plushness, especially in back cushions, we can wrap fibre multiple times to create a softer, more luxurious feel.

Polyester fibre wrap is available in a variety of thicknesses. At our facility, we carry ½”, 1.25″, 2″, and 3″ options. The most common and default thickness for fibre wrap orders is 1.25″. It is precisely cut to the size of the cushion and joined, using foam adhesive, to the top, bottom and front of a seat cushion.

Why You Should Consider Fibre Wrapping?

Fibre wrapping offers many benefits beyond comfort. While it enhances the softness of your seat, its most noticeable impact is on the appearance of your cushions. Fibre wrap helps conceal minor imperfections in the foam and fills out the fabric, giving cushions a fuller, more rounded look. Without fibre, foam alone can appear flat and angular, while the fabric may look loose or saggy.

Additionally, fibre wrap serves as a protective layer, helping to extend the lifespan of the foam by reducing wear and tear.

How Does Fibre Protect The Foam?

Fibre serves as a protective barrier between the foam and the fabric backing, playing a crucial role in reducing friction. This friction can cause wear and tear over time, leading to foam degradation and fabric distortion. By incorporating a fibre layer, you essentially protect the foam from direct contact with the fabric, which minimizes the stress placed on both materials.

Without the protective layer of fibre, friction can cause ripping and lead to the foam deteriorating more quickly. In addition to preventing fabric abrasions, fibre also makes it easier to insert and remove foam from cushions, reducing the risk of damage.

How Do We Apply Fibre?

At Foamite we apply the fibre with a water-based adhesive. Once applied it will take approximately 48 hours for the glue to dry. We want to make sure that ample time is provided for the glue to dry. If a cushion is compressed for shipping too early it will damage the fibre.

Try Fibre Wrapping Today!

While not a requirement, fibre wrapping enhances your cushions’ appearance and helps extend the lifespan of your foam. Additionally, fibre wrap makes it easier to remove and reinsert the foam if you need to change or clean the covers in the future.

When you’re ready to fibre wrap your cushions and refresh their look, there’s no need to adjust your foam size or thickness. Since fibre compresses easily, simply add it to your cushions without worrying about altering your foam measurements.
