Here is a summary of some of the Biggest Myths you should know about when it’s time to buy a new mattress:

1. Thicker is Better
Thicker is not better.  A thinner 6 or 8-inch mattress made with heavier and more natural comfort ingredients is better than a thicker mattress that is made with more air and fluff. Fluff is what they use in pillow-tops. It gives you the false impression of comfort but it’s not Real Comfort.

2. Firmer is Better
A firm mattress resists rather than conforming to the natural position of your body. Therefore, your body must constantly adjust in order to get comfortable – sometimes as much as 60 to 80 times a night. If you want to sleep better you should buy a layered mattress that allows you to sleep on the mattress, and not on it. Considering that the majority of people sleep on a mattress that is the wrong firmness, it’s no wonder why sleep experts and educated consumers alike are now using Ergocheck Testing, the latest in sleep technology, to determine what firmness is right for you on your side of the bed.

3. A Memory foam mattress is made with all memory foam
Memory foam is very soft. It comes in many different weights or densities but mostly in a super soft compression. It is used in the top 3 or 4 inches of a mattress for comfort. You need something firmer under the memory foam for support. The games begin when mattress makers use lighter, thinner or cheaper filler foams to fill some of the space and to keep the cost down. 4. A one-inch memory foam topper works great on a spring mattress
Memory foam mattresses have been the hottest thing in bedding for the last decade. In order to capitalize on their success, spring mattress makers started putting very little memory foam (1 or 2 inches) on top of their cores (Spring Memory Foam Construction). It doesn’t work. You go right through the memory foam and sleep directly on the harder springs. In order for the memory foam to work properly, it should be layered with other grades of foam that work together as a system.

5. All foam used in mattress making is the same
Foam is the key comfort ingredient used in all mattresses. It is the fastest-growing sleep surface and the number one brand of premium mattresses that are presently sold in many countries throughout Europe and in North America. All foam grades are not created equal (see Foam Grades).

6. All Latex Rubber is 100% Natural
Hybrid Latex is 21% natural rubber that is mixed with 79% polyurethane foam. The sales staff implies natural and some customers assume that it is 100% natural (see The Original All Natural Latex Rubber).

7. Innerspring mattresses are better
Traditional spring mattresses are cheaper to produce and better for the people that are selling them. They make more profit. The original imported cores are one inch thick. When you pop the clips they spring up to eight inches. What do you think the added seven inches is made of? It is mostly air. You are paying for air!

8. The cover is the most important part of the mattress
This is not true but many people make decisions, in mattress stores, based on the look of the cover. The cover is important if it is made with natural ingredients that give you specific health benefits; otherwise, please remember “It’s What’s Inside That Counts!

9. Foam mattresses are hot
No matter what mattress you are sleeping on, you will be sleeping on foam. It is true that some memory foam mattresses are hot but new innovations in the last couple of years using cool gel, air vents in the firm edges, 3D mesh borders and dri-fit fabric for mattress covers have made memory foam mattresses cooler than ever (see Koosh ViscoGel Memory Foam)

10. Foam collapses prematurely
When we used to do Home Shows people that had a bad foam mattress experience used to walk by our booth and say, “I would never sleep on foam, it doesn’t last“. Others that slept on good foam that lasted for 20 years, would give us the thumbs up and say, “I would never sleep on anything else!” Buy your next mattress from the inside out. Buy the best foam you can directly from the factory so that you can get better quality for less.

11. A more expensive mattress is better
Believe it or not, a couple that came into our showroom actually turned to each other and said, “This memory foam mattress can’t be as good as the one we saw at the last store because it is $1,000 less”. Obviously, they did not understand the concept of shopping factory direct and how, if you go to the right source, you can get better quality for less.

12. When it comes to firmness, couples have to compromise
Usually, when couples differ greatly in size or preference one has to sacrifice and give in to the other. Or instead of going one way or the other they settle for something in between. A 250 pounder sleeping on a medium will hammock in the mattress and develop lower back problems. A 120 pounder may find the medium too firm and complain about restless tossing and turning caused by pressure points in her shoulders and hips. 8 Things to Know About Afternoon Power Napping

Have you had an afternoon nap lately?

You know you want to. It’s not a sign of being lazy, in fact, it’s in your body’s chemistry. Why not try it? You may like it and its good for you.

Everybody is busy but without proper sleep, you are operating very inefficiently. It’s like bouncing a basketball that is not properly inflated. How much fun is that? After trying power napping myself, both during trips to Europe and on the couch in my office, I highly recommend them to everybody.

Here are 8 things you should know about power napping:

1. Try to nap at the same time every day, ideally 8 hours after you wake.
2. Avoid napping after 3 pm, it may throw off your body clock and make evening sleep difficult.
3. Find somewhere comfortable to nap.
4. Avoid distractions, turn off your phone, pull the curtains and turn off the lights.
5. Drink a coffee before taking a nap. The caffeine will take some time to get through your system and will help to wake you after your nap.
6. Set an alarm that will gently wake you after 25 to 30 minutes.
7. Don’t nap for more than 30 minutes. Longer naps can leave you feeling groggy and irritable. You don’t want to go into a deep sleep.
8. Get up as soon as the alarm goes off. Wash your face and expose yourself to sunlight.

power-nap-at-work-760x428It’s a view that is supported by science. A study by Nasa shows that pilots who took 24-minute naps had greatly increased mental alertness on long haul flights across the Atlantic. Scientists believe that It may be due to your body’s chemistry.

During the day, your body creates adenosine, which can make you feel sleepy. In the first 20 minutes of sleep, most adenosine breaks down just as your adrenal glands start brewing up cortisol which will make you feel more alert on waking. That’s why naps feel so wonderful – they deplete the sleepy chemicals and serve up alert ones.

It is like “Spring Cleaning” for the Brain

During our waking hours, we encounter a huge array of sensory information. We are constantly hearing, seeing, smelling, feeling and tasting. We also have thoughts and feelings about a wide range of sensory experiences. Our brain is always working and we are constantly talking to ourselves.

If we don’t filter out some of this information, our brains become overloaded. We must have a way to sort through the information we receive during the day, storing and consolidating what is important and letting the rest go. This is what Lewis calls the process of “spring cleaning” and it usually happens during sleep. This allows us to recall the salient aspects of our mornings, after a power nap, or our whole day, after a longer evening sleep day, without being overwhelmed by all the less important details.

Fun Facts About Daylight Saving Time

Hey everybody, Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend!

It is that time of year when days become shorter and nights become longer. And of course, since we are in the sleep business, this is the time of year we like singing, “Thank the Lord for the night time!”, by Neil Diamond. We too, thank the Lord for the night time to forget the day.

The time change will definitely be a disruption to your sleep routine. It will be a problem; especially in the early going, but look at the bright side if you have been following bad sleep habits, over the summer and early fall, this is your opportunity to turn it all around. Now you can adjust your body’s clock to go “early to bed and early to rise”.

Here are some fun facts about Daylight Saving Time

  1. It is actually “Daylight Saving (singular) Time”, and not “Daylight Savings (plural) Time.”
  2. The actual originator, of DST, was British-born New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson in 1895, who wanted to gain extra daylight to collect and study bugs. Hey George, you bug us! Stop messing with our sleep. If only Social Media was around back then, no way would this happen.
  3. There is no international standard for DST, which is observed by about 70 countries, excluding China and Japan. Many countries near the equator do not adjust their clocks.
  4. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the system of uniform DST throughout the U.S. and Canada calling for the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. President George W. Bush’s Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended DST (starting in 2007) from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
  5. Two-thirds of North Americans feel that DST is not worth the hassle, according to a 2014 Rasmussen poll. See I told you.
  6. While it is commonly believed that DST saves energy use, some studies show that consumption may actually increase. More time spent on social media – phones, laptops, iPads, TVs, and other screens.
  7. Television networks love November 1st when TV viewership soars.
  8. “Falling back” isn’t as dangerous as “springing ahead,” when there is a higher risk of accidents by sleep-deprived drivers, as well as heart attacks, strokes, susceptibility to illness, seasonal depression, and poorer results by students on college entrance exams.
  9. Farmers have never welcomed DTS, as commonly believed. They fought proposals to implement it, and one agricultural lobby argued to repeal it more than 100 years ago in 1919.
  10. States can exempt themselves from participating, but Arizona and Hawaii are presently the only two that do not observe the time change. I like Hawaii. Maybe we should move there?

Mattress Buying: It's all about the price, isn't it?

We call them consumers, but they should be researchers, too. In fact, a Better Sleep Council survey in 2020 found that, on average, people consult three to four sources before they make a mattress purchase. Some people just base their purchase on the price alone and believe it or not this kind of comparison can work against you.

Of course, you have the people that are bargain shoppers and price checkers who buy something because it is the lowest price but, believe it or not, there are also people that pay more for something and believe they must be getting better quality because they paid so much more for it.

A couple was in our factory showroom checking out our mattresses. Our showroom manager gave them a detailed Sleep Analysis and an education about the different grades of foam and how mattresses are made in the industry today.

I was on the mezzanine above the showroom working on a different project, when I heard the wife turn to her husband and say, “…. oh this mattress can’t be as good as the other one we saw at (blank) because it costs $1,000 less.

Seriously? I can’t be the only one thinking, what’s wrong with this picture? The other well-known national brand was selling at a Carpet store that also sold furniture and mattresses. Personally, I wouldn’t go to a foam and mattress factory to buy a carpet so why would you do the opposite?

We also get people that come into our showroom that have bought a 20-year mattress that only lasted 4 years. They are full of regrets and very disappointed that it only lasted that long considering that they paid over $4,000 for a Queen mattress at a national mattress chain.

Before you check the price and take your card out as a consumer, be a researcher first, and learn a little more about what makes a good mattress and what will provide you with long lasting comfort and support. You should also know that:

Happy Tryptophan Sleep Day!

Thanksgiving is almost here and once again we will see pictures of turkeys and talk about tryp-to-phan. What is the origin of the word? I’m pretty sure it originated from the Greek word phan which means couch. And after you have a big turkey dinner, what do you do? You take a trip-to-couch. There you go!

So what is tryptophan, anyway? And why do people have a hard time staying awake after a Thanksgiving dinner? Tryptophan is an amino acid that the body uses in the processes of making vitamin B3 and serotonin, both of which help to regulate our sleep.

Usually, tryptophan doesn’t have much of an impact unless it’s taken on an empty stomach and in an amount larger than what we’re getting from our drumstick and a few pieces of white meat. That sounds like me. I am sure that a lot of people go into Thanksgiving dinner on an empty stomach and gorge themselves on turkey and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Overeating also has something to do with it and since the turkey is usually the biggest plate on the table, it usually gets all the blame and attention. It takes a lot of energy to digest a big feast (the average Thanksgiving meal contains 3,000 calories and 229 grams of fat), so blood is sent to the digestive process system, leaving the brain feeling a little tired and looking for a place to rest: trip-to-couch.

All Foam is Not Created Equal

The ABCs of Choosing the Right Foam for Your Mattress

If you want to buy a good mattress, you should get to know your foam first because all foam is not created equal. You can trust what people tell you or learn more so people can’t pull the cover over your eyes.

Polyurethane foams (PU), Viscoelastic (VG), and their High Resiliency (HR) siblings have proven their flexibility in sleep product constructions, ushering in the age of specialty bedding, giving rise to hybrid mattresses and driving the industry-reshaping launch of boxed beds. Now, breathe!

These foams have solidified their role throughout the mattress, from sturdy conventional polyurethane foam cores to cushy, enveloping Visco comfort layers.

Today’s foam suppliers are playing with additives that boost foam quality and benefits – that intrigue consumers – while creating hybrid foams that take the best qualities of PU, VG Visco, and HR versions to create new feels and levels of support.

From Foamers to Bed Builders

Perhaps the biggest foam trend has less to do with foam bedding components themselves and more to do with the changing role of foam suppliers, who, along with their sewn cover supplier counterparts, have become bedding manufacturers in their own right.

For some foam suppliers, the vast majority of their business now is producing finished foam beds, typically boxed – and often handling fulfillment, too – mostly for direct-to-consumer e-commerce companies but also for more traditional bedding makers and retailers. Even foamers that still concentrate on pouring say they now offer finished mattresses.

Similarly, Foamite remains first and foremost a foam manufacturer, but also builds finished mattresses, with matching foundations, to meet customers’ specific design specifications.

Foamite has been in the foam and mattress business for over 30 years, since 1988, in Vaughan, Ontario. It also has an online store to serve Toronto and beyond.

Boxed beds are a driving force

At one point or another, most of the boxed bed online marketers, have approached Foamite to make their mattresses for them. Similarly, we have noticed, over the past 5 years, that this sector has become extremely competitive.

Most boxed specialists started with foam-only models which created intense competition to come up with new foam formulations and constructions that they could use to differentiate their products from others.

They also have become masters of the ABCs of writing creative product descriptions that use words that sell, sell, sell. As a result, we now get 2 or 3 customers a week that bring us their boxed mattresses for repairs.

The mattress below, marketed by a top-national brand, was used for 3 years. It now has softened up to the point where the customer is hammocking in the mattress and sagging on the sides, when she sits on the side of the bed to put on her socks – see Mattress Overview.

In the end, consumers have become very confused and don’t really know what to look for in a quality mattress; instead, they buy what they are sold.

The bonus of providing a better quality sleep lies with the sleep products manufacturers, like Foamite, that can educate consumers and give them a deeper understanding of true sleep attributes, and the ways to meet them.

You should also know that mattresses that are compressed, rolled and boxed need to be made with foams dense enough and resilient enough to withstand that type of handling yet bounce back quickly and completely when the consumer unpacks the bed at home.

If you leave the standard roll-packed mattress too long in a compressed state, the foam cells will be crushed and the mattress will feel softer than it was before you roll packed it.

When you buy direct from the Foamite Factory your foam and mattress will be roll packed the day before delivery and not shipped from a warehouse where they may have been stored, on a shelf, for up to six months.

So, what is new? What is different? Let’s look at some of the most significant trends in foam components.

“A”is for Additives

One of the reasons that iFoam and visco foam has been so popular in bedding constructions is not just its soft, conforming feel, but the fact that it’s accepting of a variety of additives; however, you have to be careful because not all foam or memory foam is the same.

There are light-weight memory foams that should be used for a headrest in a dentist’s chair, but some mattress manufacturers are using them as mattress toppers in order to hit a lower price point.

Visco-elastic (memory) foam has been a very flexible product because of the components that can be added to it. That has given it longevity in terms of marketing stories, and benefits to customers with certain issues. Visco really is responsible for the rise of foam (in bedding). Before it, there hadn’t been a lot of changes in polyurethane, except convolution and contour cutting.

For the most part, newer additives for bedding foams are intended to help regulate mattress temperature, reduce moisture, deter bed bugs and absorb odors to keep the mattress hygienic. Other ingredients are linked to health claims, such as reducing inflammation or improving circulation in sleepers.

One of the trends I see is thermal conductors being added to foams – copper, gold, silver, platinum. And we’re starting to do more with graphite, which helps with cooling and activated charcoal, which has odor inhibitors.

“B” is for Bio-based

In an effort to make polyurethane foams more sustainable, some foamers are adding bio-based polyols to the mix. The greener foams are particularly popular in Europe and, at Interzum Cologne. Foamite with its Koosh Natural has introduced a greener high resiliency (HR) foam to Canada.

In this case, more than half of the petrochemicals in Koosh HR have been replaced with bio-based poly rolls. The versatile foams are available in various weights and densities and are suitable for use in mattress cores, transition layers and comfort layers.

“C” is for Cooling

We are now seeing a focus on the cooling trend in mattress layers and covers. People in our showroom are asking for solutions that are not only cooler to the touch, but that have lasting coolness throughout the night.

We have a number of ways to add cooling properties, including swirls of cool gel in our ViscoGel Memory Foam, a solid gel topper (which we call NeoGel), air channels which are cut into the foam (Contour Pockets), a more open-celled structure (Qik-Dri), PCMs which are added to our iFoam, 3D mesh borders in our Euro-cover designs and our CoolMax covers, which are made with cooling thread that we will be introduced as soon as the pandemic will allow us to do so.

“C” is for Constructions, too

To create new feels, bedding manufacturers continue to experiment with how they layer foams in mattress constructions.

Top-Brand Mattress Return

Memory foams still tend to be used foremost in top comfort layers but now a firmer memory foam (as seen above) is starting to appear in transition layers. Some people don’t like the ‘dead’ feel of memory foam.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve found that convolute or contour foam pockets make a good transition layer and provide a different feel, better air flow and more support than going with the second layer of memory foam.

In our Swiss Sensal mattress we like to use a layer of iFoam under the all-natural latex. The Phase Changing Materials (PCMs), in the iFoam, work through the holes in the latex to remove the heat from your mattress and maintain a more consistent temperature in your sleep surface (not too hot and not too cold).

When to Replace Your Mattress: Here are 9 Signs

Have you checked your mattress lately? If not, now may be a good time to do so.

Many people use the warranty of their mattress as a guide to determine when it’s time to replace it. However, what people should know is that the comfort ingredients, on top of your spring core, wear out much sooner than the springs and that sagging or softening of the top layers is considered normal wear by the mattress industry. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are 9 signs to determine if you need a new mattress:

1) Your mattress is over 8 years old
The age of the mattress is one of the first things to consider. Most people don’t remember when they bought their last mattress. If you are not good at keeping files, you should write the date of purchase on the mattress label. Consumer Reports magazine recommends replacement every 7 to 10 years. This may be a shock to many people who have purchased a mattress with a 20-year warranty. You should know that the warranty is meant to cover certain parts (springs) and workmanship and not a mattress’s overall comfort.

If you get a good night’s sleep you should wake up feeling refreshed and rested. If you find that you are waking up tired and feeling drowsy during the day (and you don’t suffer from other sleep disorders like sleep apnea) it may be due to too much tossing and turning throughout the night. Your body is working overtime to find a comfortable sleeping position that does not exist.

3) You wake up with aches and pains and holding your back

Are you waking up stiff and tired every morning? If you are then chances are you need a new mattress. Old mattresses tend to gradually lose the ability to provide proper support and once the comfort zone has matted down you will get pressure points by sleeping directly on the springs. As the comfort layers lose their compression (if not their shape), your mid-section, which represents the heavier part of your body, will sag into the mattress.

This can create significant pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. You will also get uncomfortable pressure points that will cause you to toss and turn all night long. Morning neck and back pain that gets better throughout the day is a sign that you need a new mattress or that you are sleeping on a mattress that is the wrong firmness for your body.

4) Other places feel more comfortable
If you find yourself going into another bedroom to sleep or prefer the couch to your bed, this is a fairly good indication that you should consider buying a new mattress. The same goes if you find that you are sleeping better on a hotel mattress when you go away on vacation. Your mattress should be comfortable and supportive. It should give your body a rest and some time to relax and fully recover. 5) Your spring mattress squeaks or your box spring creaks
The ability of your mattress to provide support can be greatly affected by what supports your mattress. If you feel like your mattress is in fairly good condition but that something is off, consider checking your bed’s foundation (box spring) and the frame that it’s sitting on. Broken or worn-out box springs can affect a mattress’s comfort, support, and shape. Similarly a frame, without a centre support, may cause even a new mattress to sag in the centre.

6) You have a visible and noticeable sag
If you feel pain in your joints, muscles, or your back, inspect your bed to see if there are signs of sagging or body impressions. Sagging can occur as springs break down and lose resiliency and impressions occur as the polyester fiber, foam, and felt compress over a short period of time. Sagging and impressions as little as 1.5″ in depth are linked to increased pain according to sleep surveys by back experts. If your “pillow-top” mattress is showing a sag at this level or greater, a new mattress should be on the top of your priority list well before you plant your new flowers for the season or open up your pool (if you have one).

If you feel like you are sagging into the mattress, even when there is no noticeable sag, it is probably due to the softening of the core in your memory foam or full foam mattress. Qik-Dri (Quick Dry) Foam For Your Outdoor Comfort Needs

It’s almost summertime baby! And what do we do in the summertime? All kinds of things, but my favourite is sitting around a pool or a campfire, on a comfortable seat, and talking with friends or family all day or all night long.

Since the warm weather is ahead, let’s talk about what people use for outdoor foam. We supply foam to a company that custom makes outdoor cushions and sells them online. They have decided to go with a 1.8-pound density. They offer it in two different compressions (medium and firm) depending on the customer’s preference.

This grade is a polyurethane grade. They absorb water, when it rains or if they were to fall into the pool. They are not mold or mildew resistant if you are using them for a boat mattress or a cottage mattress that sits in a cottage that is not heated year round. In applications such as this, you should go with the Koosh Natural High Resiliency foam or the Qik-Dri outdoor foam.

The Koosh Natural (KN line) is the most natural and it is mold and mildew resistant. It is a 2.7-pound density and it is available in seven different compressions – from soft to extra x-firm.

The Qik-Dri (QD Line) is the best and most porous foam used in outdoor applications. However, it is only a 1.8-pound density. It is lighter than the Koosh Natural. This means that it will not last as long before it starts to sag and lose its shape. It is available in two compressions – QD30 (Medium) and the QD50 (Firm). It is more expensive than the Koosh Natural because of its open cell construction and water flow characteristics.

Outdoor Foam

The grade you select for your outdoor use depends on:

  1. What the cushions will be covered with – regular or outdoor fabric.
  2. Whether or not they will be left totally outdoors or covered by an awning or overhang.
  3. Whether they will be left outside or brought in when it look like rain.

Watch What You Ingest

How to Prevent Neck and Shoulder Pain

Neck pain is a common complaint that we hear from people that are shopping for pillows. Neck muscles can be strained from poor posture throughout the day and then its usually the pillow that gets blamed for most of people’s neck problems. Here is what you can do to exercise your neck and to prevent neck and shoulder pain.

How many hours do you spend watching monitors each day? Do you go from your desktop to your laptop, to your tablet, to your television and sit there, in the same position, with bad posture?

Two out of three of us will have neck pain at some time in our lives. In most cases, it is not due to a serious disease or medical problems and often the exact cause for the pain is not clear. This is called ‘nonspecific neck pain’. Most are probably due to minor sprains or bad posture. The best advice to avoid acute or chronic neck pain is to keep the neck active during the day and to stretch it on a daily basis to prevent stiffness and nerve blockage.

You can reach for more painkillers or you can do something naturally to help curb neck or shoulder pain and to maintain proper spine alignment.

What are the types and causes of neck pain?

Neck pain is common. About 2 in 3 people develop some type of neck pain at some time in their lives. In a recent Canadian Study, of 45 to 75 year-olds, they discovered that 1 in 4 women and about 1 in 5 men were currently experiencing neck pain.

Nonspecific neck pain is the most common type. Often the exact cause or origin of the pain is not known. It may include minor strains and sprains to muscles or ligaments in the neck. Bad posture may also be a contributing factor in some cases. For example, neck pain is more common in people who spend much of their working day at a desk, with a ‘bent-forward’ posture.

What are the treatments for nonspecific neck pain?

Exercise your neck and keep active. Aim to keep your neck moving as normally as possible. At first, the pain may be quite bad and you may need to rest for a day or so. However, gently exercise the neck as soon as you are able.

Use a Wellness Wedge on a daily basis so your neck does not ‘stiffen up’. If your neck is sore or stiff, gradually try to increase the range of the neck movements. Every few hours gently move the neck in each direction. Do this several times a day. As far as possible, continue with normal activities. You will not cause damage to your neck by moving it.
