At FOAMITE, we deal with a lot of Chiropractors who have different opinions about what type of mattress is best for people with lower back pain. Most of the old-timers still like recommending a firm or extra firm mattress for people who suffer from back pain. However, we do our best to convince them otherwise.
Back pain is one of the top reasons why people begin to lose mobility in middle age. Pain can keep people from engaging in physical activity, making it more difficult for them to maintain a healthy weight and keep up their strength, stamina, and balance as they age. So, treating and managing back pain that results from injuries or health problems is crucial for staying on the path of a healthy and active life.
Considering that most people spend roughly a third of their lives lying in bed, choosing the right mattress is essential for managing low back pain. It can make a difference in whether you can sleep at night and how you function the next day.
In the past, doctors often recommended very firm mattresses. However, one survey of 268 people with low back pain found that those who slept on very hard mattresses had the poorest sleep quality. And there was no difference in sleep quality between those who used medium-firm and firm mattresses.
Soft mattresses, on the other hand, can also be problematic. While a soft mattress that conforms to your body’s natural curves may help the joints align favorably, you might also sink in too deeply that you sleep with a curved spine which is often the cause of more back pain.
If you want to find out whether a firmer mattress would feel better than the one, you’re currently using, you can try putting a plywood board under your mattress to dampen the movement from the bedsprings or try placing your mattress on the floor.
Of course, you can also go to a foam and mattress showroom, like Foamite, to try and test a variety of models. But keep in mind that what feels comfortable for a few minutes in a store might not translate into a good night’s sleep. A more reliable test is our Ergo Check Technology, that we use as a guide to help determine your correct firmness.
The best thing to do is to buy a Simon Mattress, that is made with adjustable mid-core layers that you can rotate amongst several different firmness levels until you find the one that works best for you.
By moving the layers around you can adjust the overall firmness to make your mattress feel softer or firmer. A softer topper will allow you to contour into your mattress and prevent any uncomfortable pressure points that cause restless tossing and turning. A firmer mattress, in your mid-section, will give you better support and help to maintain your spine in its natural alignment. This equates to no back pain and a better night’s sleep.
Be the best that you can be by doing whatever is necessary to improve your sleep!
Sincerely,

On June 3, we celebrated our 35th Business Anniversary. If there is one thing that we have learned over the past 35 years, it is that there is a big difference between Fake and Real Comfort.
In marketing they teach salespeople to sell the sizzle and not the steak. This means that one should be selling the benefits of their product instead of the features, or selling people what they want as opposed to what they need. People want comfort but they really need to understand what they need to buy to make that comfort, and support, last longer.
According to Bedding Industry experts, “…consumers don’t really know what to look for in sleep products. Instead, they buy what is sold to them by retail salespeople”. If you want to avoid the pitfalls of foam and mattress shopping, and a bad sitting or sleeping experience, you should go to a sleep products manufacturer like FOAMITE.
FOAMITE is a foam and mattress manufacturer. They know foam and they know comfort. You should know that foam is the key comfort ingredient used in all mattresses. And if you want to buy a good mattress, you should get to know your foam first because not all foam is created equal.
Have you looked inside a mattress lately?
Spring Mattress technology was patented in 1865 and not much has changed since then. The lightweight foam and fibre used in a pillow top mattress looks good on the showroom floor but sags prematurely. This is what we call “Fake Comfort”. If you want to read more about that, see mattress problemsSpring Mattress technology was patented in 1865 and not much has changed since then. The lightweight foam and fibre used in a pillow top mattress looks good on the showroom floor but sags prematurely. This is what we call “Fake Comfort”. If you want to read more about that, see mattress problems.
Now in case you think we are putting down spring mattresses so we can sell against them, you should know that we are not. As a matter of fact, we don’t like selling things; instead, we like to educate people so they can buy good value at a better factory direct price. We make better mattresses because we use better foam.
Full Foam Mattress
Believe it or not, you can also experience fake comfort on a full foam mattress if you don’t buy the right grades of foam in your topper, core, and firm edges. The problem with foam mattresses sold in mattress stores or those that come to you rolled up in a box, is that they are not made with the best grades of foam available.
These mattresses may keep their shape for 10 years, but when they soften with use after 3 years, you quickly find out that the warranty does not cover softening and that this is considered “normal wear”. They will also tell you that, “all foam does that”.
This is not entirely true. All foam does not do that. Commercial high-resiliency foam like Preserve HR and Koosh Natural, do not lose their shape or soften with use as quickly as conventional polyurethane foam grades which are used in regular mattress production.
This is why owners of furniture and mattress manufacturers go to FOAMITE to buy better foam for their personal sofas or mattresses than the grades which they use in their regular production for their customers. You should too!
FOAMITE also offers a program where they can rework full foam mattresses that have failed prematurely or that may require a firmer core or firm border for better edge support. This way people can continue with their mattress, rather than having to throw it out and start all over again. Better for you and the environment.
Conclusion
FOAMITE is the best-kept secret in the GTA for Real Comfort. Real Comfort means using better quality foam, for all your sitting or sleeping requirements, that is guaranteed to last. We are also very transparent, that is why all our mattress covers are made with zippers, so you can look inside and because we have nothing to hide.
Hey, what time is it? It’s summertime baby! And what do we do in the summertime? All kinds of things, but my favourite is sitting around a pool or a camp fire, with a tea in my hand, and talking with friends or family all day or all night long.
There are thousands of different varieties of teas available in the world and they only vary by the region that they are grown, the time of year they are picked, and the processing method that they go through.
The point is if there are so many varieties of tea, so why do so many people still think that there is only one type of foam and that it is all the same? We carry 45 Grades of foam but there are many more. People mainly use foam for sleep and comfort. However, if you don’t take the time to educate yourself a little about the different grades of foam you may be buying or getting foam that is the wrong type, quality or price.
Relax, We Can Help
We supply foam to a company that custom makes outdoor cushions and sells them online. They have decided to go with a 1.8 pound density. They offer it in two different compressions (medium and firm) depending on the customer’s preference.
Another company that we supply foam to makes outdoor patio seat cushions for a large department store. They use the 1.3 pound density in the medium firm compression. They buy much larger volumes of the same size and they use the lighter weight foam to keep the price down.
Both of these grades are polyurethane grades. They absorb water, when it rains or if they were to fall into the pool. They are not mold or mildew resistant if you are using them for a boat mattress or a cottage mattress that sits in a cottage that is not heated year round. In applications such as this you should go with the Koosh Natural High Resiliency foam or the Qik-Dri outdoor foam.
The Koosh Natural (KN line) is the most natural and it is mold and mildew resistant. It is a 2.5 pound density and it is available in seven different compressions – from soft to extra x-firm.
The Qik-Dri (QD Line) is the best and most porous foam used in outdoor applications. However, it is only a 1.8 pound density. It is lighter than the Koosh Natural. This means that it will not last as long before its starts to sag and lose its shape. It is available in two compressions – QD30 (Medium) and the QD50 (Firm). It is more expensive than the Koosh Natural because of its open cell construction and water flow characteristics.
The grade you decide to go with for your outdoor use depends on:
1. What the cushions will be covered with – regular or outdoor fabric.
2. Whether or not they will be left totally outdoors or covered by an awning or overhang.
3. Whether they will be left outside or brought in when it looks like rain.
Final Word
In outdoor cushioning applications your products require a cushion that will withstand rigorous use wet or dry. Qik-Dri is ideal for outdoor furniture, golf carts, boat cushions, the bottom of boat mattresses (to dissipate heat and moisture) and other cushioned surfaces that are exposed to the elements.
Don’t let the weather ruin your outdoor comfort time.
Sincerely,
R.C. (Bob) Dimas

“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you!” Zig Ziglar
If you want to buy a lifetime mattress, that will help you sleep better, you need to learn a thing or two about what you need to help you get there and sleep your best.
A good mattress should last 20 years. Period.
Unfortunately, a week doesn’t go by where we get someone in our showroom complaining about a competitor’s 20-year mattress that has only lasted 3 or 4 years. This applies to spring mattresses or the newest and latest brand of foam mattresses that are being sold in boxes throughout social media.
If it’s a spring mattress usually the top layers will mat down after a short period of time and before you know it, you will be sleeping directly on the springs. When you call for a warranty then you discover that the warranty only applies to the spring core of your mattress and not the comfort layers. Any sagging, up to 1.5″, is considered normal wear.
Store-bought foam mattresses are made with polyurethane foam that pre-maturely softens with use. The 10 or 15-year warranty only covers the thickness of the mattress. The softening which causes you to hammock into it is once again considered normal wear and not covered by warranty.
Simon says, sleep better on a Custom Mattress!
The Simon Adjustable Mattress is made with the most natural high resiliency comfort ingredients that are guaranteed to last. It is a modern mattress designed to give you the best comfort and support based on your wants and needs.
This revolutionary mattress construction is currently patent pending and is a disruption to the way mattresses are currently made and marketed today. The industry may want you to buy a new mattress every 6 to 8 years, but we would rather help you pursue a more sustainable approach that is good for you and the environment.
Landfills are full of old spring mattress cores that will be here long after we are all gone. Why add to the problem when instead you can be part of the solution. By replacing one or two layers, you can continue with the same mattress for 20 years. How do we know that? We know because that’s how we’ve done it for our family members for close to 35 years and now we can do the same for you.
Real Comfort is a mattress that is made to suit your weight, preference, and back condition using High Resiliency foam that does not soften with use and that is guaranteed to last.
What kinds of people come to see us? Usually, people that have had a bad mattress experience or the ones that are sick and tired of buying a 20-year mattress that only lasts 3 or 4 years.

Getting enough sleep is important not only because it helps you feel better the next day, but because it also plays a critical role in maintaining your good health.
Bad sleep is chronic. Poor sleep results in an increased risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Hormones wreak havoc. Missing out on adequate sleep can interfere with your body’s hormones, leading to irritability, mood swings, cognitive impairment and slowed motor coordination.
You don’t have immunity for the next challenge. Lack of sleep can also affect your immune system, making you more likely to get sick with colds, flues, and other illnesses.
Power down your brain
While a big part of your ability to sleep well has to do with your sleep environment, your own mind may be part of what’s disturbing your rest. Here’s what people say is keeping them up at night:
Family matters. 23% say family issues are preventing them from sleeping.
Sleep debt. 16% blame personal finances for lack of shut eye.
As the world turns. 2% are awake because of current events.
Turning off your worries and thoughts is essential if you’re going to sleep well. Meditation before bed can help sweep the debris in your mind into a corner. Making your bedroom a worry-free zone allows you to sleep freely. Keep everything that relates to work or stress (like your phone, TV, paperwork, bills, etc.) in a separate room, physically separated from where you sleep.
Schedule a sleep appointment
Getting yourself into a routine where you go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time (even on weekends) will lull your body into the habit of regular sleep. Be very strict with your bedtime. Don’t let yourself get distracted by social media, what’s on TV or work you didn’t get done. When it’s bedtime, just go to bed, no matter what. Soon your body will be on board, and you will naturally fall asleep and wake up when you are supposed to.
Since we spend 33% of our lives asleep, improving sleep means improving one-third of your life — not to mention that those benefits carry over to when you’re awake too!
Cast a sleep spell
Set up a routine that you can do every night before bed. Make sure you have time to unwind before your bedtime ritual begins. Then follow the same series of steps that lead you from being awake to being asleep every night. For example: lock the doors, turn the dishwasher on, put your pajamas on, wash your face, brush your teeth, pull the blinds, fluff your pillows, turn on gentle music, read a few pages of a book, then turn off the light and gently allow your mind to drift among pleasant thoughts. Doing the same things every single night signals to your body that sleep is coming and helps your body and mind relax so sleep comes easily.
Make your bed for good sleep
The biggest factor in how well you’re sleeping is your mattress. A mattress that is old or uncomfortable results in aches and pains, tossing and turning, and sleep that is not as restful and restorative as it should be. If you’re not waking up feeling refreshed and relaxed, it’s time to look at your mattress and evaluate its condition.
Lumps and bumps. A mattress that is uneven needs to be replaced.
Rags to riches. If your mattress is visibly worn, tattered, or stained, it is begging for an upgrade.
Cheating on your mattress. Have you had a better night’s sleep at a hotel or at a friend’s house than you get at home? If so, your mattress is not doing its job and needs to be replaced.
Age discrimination. The life span of a mattress is no more than five to seven years. It’s time to replace it once you reach that threshold.
Lifetime mattress. Our Simon mattress is made with adjustable and replaceable parts that will allow you to prolong the life of your mattress.
Clean up your sleep
Clean sleeping, like clean eating, allows you to achieve good mental and physical health by taking sleep seriously and committing to getting the amount of sleep your body needs, without pills, prescriptions, or sleep aids. Naturally adjusting your surroundings and activities allows you to gently slip into sleep each night. Clean sleep can be the key to gentle aging, lowered stress and anxiety, staying slim, and looking and feeling good.
Sincerely,
R.C. (Bob) Dimas

If Katy Perry were writing this blog, it probably would start something like this – “cause your hot and I’m cold, turn it down and I’m gold, your wrong when its right, sleep cooler tonight, we fight, we wake up, turn it down, let’s make up…” Try it a few times, its even better with background music. Okay, I am not a songwriter but I do play one from time to time. Anyway, back to the day job…
According to experts cooler is better
Studies have found that in general, the ideal temperature, all year round, for sleeping better is quite cool, around 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, that’s between 16 to 20 Celsius. Temperatures that fall too far below or above this range can lead to restlessness and disrupted sleep cycles.
Temperatures in this range help facilitate the decrease in core body temperature that in turn initiates sleepiness. A growing number of studies are finding that temperature regulation plays a role in many cases of chronic insomnia.
Researchers have shown, for example, that insomniacs tend to have a warmer core body temperature than normal sleepers just before bed, which leads to heightened arousal and a struggle to fall asleep.
For troubled sleepers, a cool room and a hot-water bottle placed at your feet, to give you warmth, actually helps lower core temperature, and eliminates the impulsive need to raise the temperature. Some people like to wear socks. You may also want to try this, before you reach for the thermostat.
Keep it cool with Gel in or on your mattress
People that sleep hot should avoid conventional memory foam mattresses and pillows. They are comfortable but they are also somewhat hot. Over the past several years, memory foams have been the hottest material in premium bedding – in more ways than one. Memory foams have the ability to conform to your personal body shape, thereby providing customized comfort just where you need it. However, many people find that memory foams also tend to trap body heat, making them uncomfortably warm to sleep on.
Our Koosh ViscoGel is the latest bio-based natural memory foam that is infused with swirls of cooling gel. It’s cool and comfortable. If you like it even cooler try a layer of our solid blue NeoGel on top of the ViscoGel memory foam. You can also put socks on your feet, as cold feet, in particular, can be very disruptive to sleep. It works for me; especially, during the colder winter months.
While most sleep experts, I included, advocate for a slightly chilly room for optimal sleep quality, the truth of it is that the ideal temperature varies from person to person. Other things (clothes, covers, sleep surface, body temperature) also come into play.
Final Note
If you want to sleep better, you don’t have to fight with your sleep partner. All you have to do is ask them to read our blog or give us a call. As a custom sleep manufacturer we have many options that can be used to give both of you what you need or want to sleep better.
Start every day with a good night’s sleep…

Have you bought a foam mattress that has sagged or softened prematurely? Does it look old and tired, even though it’s not that old? Then it’s time to pull yourself out of that hole and do something to fix it. Let us show you how to get a mattress makeover, for your existing mattress, rather than throwing it away and starting from scratch. Worse than that is sleeping on a mattress that no longer works just because you paid so much money for it and you’re not covered by the so-called “warranty”.
When we’re done with it, your mattress will feel new and rejuvenated. Just like the lady in the before and after pictures above. She looks old and tired in the Before picture but much more energetic in the After picture.
Whenever I go online to find out what’s happening in the mattress industry, I get pretty depressed. The mattress in a box e-tailer market is a wasteland of overpriced cheap foam mattresses that are hyped by well-paid influencers that have a loyal following.
It’s What’s Inside That Counts!
They take a basic foam mattress and hype it up with these high-end videos to make it look like the best mattress ever. It’s unfortunate but a lot of people are buying them and are learning the hard way that, “It’s what’s inside that counts!” Not only what’s inside the box, but also what’s under the cover.
We may not have high-end videos but we sure know comfort. And that’s why a lot of these mattress in a box e-tailers have talked to us at one point or another to make their mattresses for them.
Foam is the key comfort ingredient used in all mattresses. Still, that doesn’t mean that all mattress manufacturers are using top-notch foam in their mattresses. Unfortunately, even the expensive one’s sold in stores, settle for the lower quality foam to maximize profits. The onus is still on the consumer to educate themselves so that they get the best quality at the right price.
How does one go about doing that? Well for starters you must look past the social media marketing, the influence peddling, and the advertising. There is no better place to get a good education than by visiting a foam and mattress factory.
What’s Old is New Again!
Last week a few of my younger poker buddies asked me if I had heard about the “new” mattress-in-a-box technology. “Oh, grasshopper…” I said, “although it may be new to you because you just saw it on social media, it wasn’t new at all.”
This technology has been around since 1985 when I first saw it at Woodbridge Foam. As long as 35 years ago, they were compressing and rolling low-density foam mattresses for IKEA. The compressed mattresses, then sat in a warehouse, for a prolonged period of time before they were sold.
Fair warning: If you want to buy a good mattress and sleep better, you’re going to have to do some work.
This includes going back a second time and changing the core if you didn’t get it right the first time around. Very few companies offer this service, but we do.
You can also bring your mattress back to us, as many times as you want, for as long as you own your Foamite mattress. We can re-work it to suit your changing needs or preference. If you buy our Simon Adjustable Lifetime Mattress, you can do it yourself.
Instead of letting others sell you the firmness and grades that they think are best for you, why not educate yourself and buy the right mattress for your size, back condition, and preference at a great factory direct price?
Here are 11 reasons why you shouldn’t buy a mattress in a box, sight unseen:
1) They are not made with the best quality foam
The picture to the left shows the inside of one of the most popular online mattresses sold today. The bottom layers are usually filler grades and nowhere near as good as the thinner top layers.
We carry 45 different grades of foam and they are not all the same. If you want to buy a good mattress,
get to know your foam first. Mattress-in-box sellers go to a foam manufacturer and have them make a layered foam mattress for them.
2) They do not make the foam or their own mattresses
Mattress in a box marketers say that their mattresses are made in Canada, but you shouldn’t assume that they are the ones that are making them. They are not! We make the foam and the mattresses.
Over the past 5 years, we have been approached by several internet mattress marketers that have asked us to make their mattresses for them. We declined because we prefer the quality approach to business at the lowest factory direct price.
3) The price is NOT right!
Since they don’t make their own foam or mattresses, the only way they can beat a Factory Direct manufacturer is by using lower quality grades and materials.
Most of their mattress covers are one-sided. The bottom is usually finished with a liner and not the same material that is used on the top. If you want to buy a mattress like that we can make you one for much less.
4) They are not made with firm edges
When you sit on the side of the mattress it squishes all the way down to the base. It is not made with firm edges because you cannot compress them to fit in a box.
5) You can’t compress and roll-pack the firmer grades
If you are a bigger person or if you have back pain, you may need a firmer mattress core for better support and back pain relief. You cannot order one in a box because the compression and the roll-packing machine have their limitations. It cannot compress the firmer options.
6) The mattress softens up (prematurely) when they crush the foam
When you compress a 10″ mattress down to 1″ and leave it like that for an extended period of time, this will crush the cells in the foam and make the mattress softer than it was before you put it through the crushing process.
This means a medium firmness will feel like a medium soft after you crush and roll it. Once you start using that polyurethane foam mattress it will continue to soften with use. Within a few months, you will be sagging into your mattress. This is not good because you need a firmer core to maintain your spine in its natural alignment.
7) What happens after the 100-day free trial period?
You’re on your own. Many mattress in-a-box customers have come to see us for repairs and alterations after the free trial period. Consumers that have already had a bad mattress experience turn out to be some of our best customers.
If you have bought a mattress in a box and it didn’t turn out as you thought, you can bring it to us and we can re-work it (mattress makeover) so that you can continue with the same mattress for many years to come.
8) If you live in the GTA there is a better way
You may have to buy a mattress in a box if you live in a rural community far away from everything, but if you live in the Greater Toronto Area there is a better way to buy a good mattress.
Go directly to a foam and mattress manufacturer where you can go back and change the core of your mattress, as many times as you want, for as long as you own your mattress.
9) Don’t buy what they’re selling
Instead, buy what we can make for you in a manner that makes good economic sense. Shop Factory Direct and get better quality for less.
10) One mattress’s firmness does not fit all
They want you to believe that one mattress construction is good for everybody, but it’s not. If it was, we wouldn’t need 45 different grades of foam and countless combinations.
Instead, we would be carrying only 3 grades: soft, medium, and firm. Hey, what about super soft and extra firm and medium firm and lighter-weight less expensive firm and more natural green foam and long-lasting high resiliency foam and so on? Do you see what I mean?
11) Fake versus Real Comfort
“They’re promoting fake comfort”, says John who came into our showroom to replace their mattress that came rolled up in a box. “The gimmick and convenience of buying a mattress in a box draw you in. However, it’s not like you see in their advertising. We replaced our mattress after 10 months of trying to sleep on it with no success.” John L – Woodbridge, ON
Final Note
I often tell my kids, “you don’t know, what you don’t know… until you know it.” It’s unfortunate but it’s true.
Remember, if you want to buy a good mattress, get to know your foam first! The key comfort ingredient that is used in all mattresses is foam. The type of foam that you choose will improve the quality of your sleep and the longevity of your mattress, in terms of comfort, support, and durability.

In stores and on the Web, there are plenty of mattresses labeled organic natural or eco-friendly but little guidance about what exactly they mean, or what made any one of them better or different from the other or compared to a conventional spring mattresses.
Toxic Chemicals Are Everywhere
Most people don’t realize that most foam is made from petro-chemicals and that foam is on every mattress that you buy.
I think that people need to start paying more attention to what they’re sleeping on. They need to stop going into stores and believing everything that salespeople tell them. They need to take personal responsibility for their family’s health because nobody is regulating what you or your baby are sleeping on and all foam is not created equal.
Consumers don’t really know what to look for in sleep products. They will buy what they are sold. Therefore, the onus for better and more natural sleep lies with the sleep products manufacturers, like Foamite, to educate people and to supply them with the best and most natural options available.
A consumer can only hope, when shopping for a crib mattress or any mattress, that they deal with salespeople who are open and very candid. However, most salespeople earn a living by selling things. Thanks, Mr. Obvious. What I mean to say is that if they don’t have a particular product they will pick one, amongst those that they do have, and call it the best.
As a manufacturer, we sell organic crib mattresses with 100% natural latex that are covered with a certified organic cotton ticking. But we also sell mattresses with polyurethane foam that are made with fire retardants, for a lot less. We don’t hide the fact that it’s a poly-foam, and that it off-gasses. We give you all the options that are available in stores, at a lower factory direct price, and then we let you decide what combination or level of natural is right for you.
We would rather sell organic crib mattresses to everyone. They are better for you and the environment. However, most people cannot afford organic; especially, if it is the real McCoy and they buy it from a retail store – with outrageous mark-ups. And of course as you become more green, it becomes more expensive.
Final Word
You don’t have to be rich for your new-born baby to sleep soundly on a truly natural mattress that is certified-pure and free of any harmful chemicals and substances.
For $269, you can buy a crib mattress, factory direct from Foamite, that is made with 100% Natural Latex, a firmer certified-pure Koosh Natural core and an organic bamboo cover. The cover is made with a zipper all around it – so you can look inside. The same mattress sells in a Baby Boutique downtown for $589. Our least expensive crib mattress is $89. You will pay double that price, for a similar grade of foam, if you bought it in a store.
Boat Mattresses and Custom Replacement Boat Cushions
When it comes to boat mattresses and custom replacement boat cushions, we have discovered that there are two types of people. Some people think, well it’s only a boat, and I am only there for the weekend, so give me something as cheap as possible. No problem, we can do that.
Meanwhile, others seem to think, Well since I am going up north to relax, make me a nice mattress that will give me the best comfort and support as possible. After all, I don’t want to come back from a long weekend with an aching back.
What’s The Price of a Good Boat Mattress?
It’s a personal thing and with over 45 different grades of foam, that can be cut to any shape or size, we can make you a boat mattress at a number of different price points. As a foam and mattress manufacturer, we can give you the best selection and quality at the lowest price.
Foamite has over 30 years of experience in designing the best V-Berth or custom boat mattresses available in today’s marketplace. All you have to do is bring in your old mattress or a pattern and we will walk you through your options and make you the best natural mattress at a great factory direct price.
Things You Need to Know
1. How to Prepare a Pattern Most custom shapes do not require a pattern but if yours does, making a pattern does not need to be intimidating or complicated. Using cardboard, fabric or newspaper, that is taped together, simply trace the outline of your boat and cut the pattern. Make your pattern the exact size you require. Please indicate on your pattern which sides should be used for zipper placement. Keep in mind that most mattress covers work best with a long 3-sided zipper.
2. Beveled Edges Many V-Berth mattresses have angled sides that take the shape of the boat’s sloped walls. In order to get the angle right, we need the old mattress as a sample or the mattress cover. It can be used as a pattern to cut the angles. If you have neither, then you will need to figure out the overall maximum width, at the desired thickness, of the new mattress.
3. Multi-Layered A boat mattress is often restricted to between 4 and 8 in thickness. In some cases, it must serve dual purposes for sitting and sleeping. Therefore, the best performing mattress, that will provide you with both soft comfort and firm deep down support, is a layered mattress.
4. Soft Topper You need a soft topper that is at least 2 or 3 thick. This will give you comfort by contouring to your body’s curves.
5. Firmer Core The firm core supports your weight and maintains your spine in its natural alignment. How firm you go depends on your weight, preference and back condition.
6. Qik-Dri Base Layer Boat interiors are frequently moist. This moisture gets trapped between your mattress and the boards below. To help avoid problems with mold or mildew you should add a 1 layer of our Qik-Dri Outdoor foam on the bottom of your mattress. It is very porous and it will help to dissipate heat and moisture much better than conventional foam.
Final Word
If you value your relaxation time and you want to a have comfortable night’s sleep, when you are away from home, then you should come in to see us for a custom boat mattress.

Hey everybody, Daylight Saving Time starts this weekend!
It is that time of year when local standard time is about to “spring forward,” and turn into Daylight Saving Time. If you forget to turn your clocks forward, I am sure your smartphone will remind you and even do it automatically for you. Oh, how nice it would be if our body’s clock was as automatic as our smartphone.
The time change will definitely be a disruption to your sleep routine. It will be a problem; especially in the early going, but look at the bright side (of the bed) if you have been following bad sleep habits, over the fall and winter, this is your opportunity to turn it all around. Now you can adjust your body’s clock to go early to bed and early to rise.
FOAMITE recommends these tips to help you ease into Daylight Saving Time:
Go to sleep at your regular bedtime on Saturday night, when clocks move forward, and wake up at your regular time on Sunday morning. This can give you an extra hour of sleep the next morning and help to reduce your sleep debt.
Block out light and keep your bedroom dark. Standard time causes the sun to rise about an hour earlier. This can impact sleep, especially for people accustomed to waking at or around sunrise.
Increase the light when you wake up. Light has an alerting effect that may help you wake up. It will also help adjust your biological clock to the new sleep schedule.
If you are having difficulty adjusting to the new time, try pushing back bedtime by 15 minutes for the next couple of nights.
If you are sleeping later, do not fight your body’s need to go to bed an hour early, this will help you wake up earlier and to feel more rested when you do.
Sleeping on the right mattress, made with the best foam, and getting into a good sleep routine is something that we highly recommend to help you sleep better, see Better Sleep Tips. However, if you have a good sleep routine it may need some adjustment.
Start every day with a good night’s sleep…
Sincerely, FOAMITE INDUSTRIES INC.

Sit Better With Replacement Foam For Sofa Cushions
A lot of upholstered furniture is not made with the best grades of foam available. There are many different grades, at various price points, and all foam is not created equal. What’s inside the cover matters and plays a very integral part to your long term comfort and to the overall look of the furniture. You should also know that just because you paid a lot of money for your furniture it does not mean that you received the best foam inside.
What’s Inside Matters
Have you ever looked inside an upholstered sofa or chair? The sketch to the right shows you a cutaway of a chair. All the green parts represent Koosh Natural high resiliency foam in a number of different compressions.
The darker green represents firmer foam and the lighter green can be softer or even super soft foam. Without getting too technical one thing you should know about foam is that the firmness does not determine the quality.
You can get really firm foam that is light-weight and that sags prematurely or you can buy heavier (high-density) and softer foam that will last much longer.
How to Buy a Really Comfortable Sofa
If you are looking to buy a new sofa here is what you should know about the foam so that you can make your shopping experience as successful as possible.
In my experience as a foam supplier, to thousands of upholstery shops and furniture manufacturers over the past 28 years, I have noticed that the majority of furniture makers like to keep it simple when it comes to foam. Few take the time to learn the difference nor do they offer their customers a choice. They stock 2 or 3 different grades because its easier for them but it may not be the best thing for you. We carry 45 different grades. It’s not all the same.
One major retailer that we deal with, buys sheets of replacement foam to service the customers that complain about their seat cushions softening or sagging after just 3 months of use. They seem to think that even if they replace 3 out of 10 customer’s cushions, it is still worth it because they make more money on the majority that don’t complain than what it costs them to satisfy the few that do.
Again, It’s What’s Inside That Counts!
I know I repeated the same heading twice but that is how important it is. When it comes to extending the life of a sofa, the padding under the fabric is everything. Less-expensive sofas wear out more quickly because of a lack of padding between the fabric cover and the frame. Lighter density foam will also sag pre-maturely and cause your fabric or leather to loosen up and become very wrinkly as you continue to sit on it. (more…)
